Krill Design, an innovative SME operating in the biomaterials sector, further strengthens its position among Italy’s leading excellence-driven companies thanks to two major recent milestones: the launch of an in-house technical laboratory at its new production facility in Paderno Dugnano, supported by an investment of approximately €1 million, and the decision to allocate 50% of future investments to Research & Development activities.
This strategic direction reflects the company’s commitment to placing sustainable innovation and local impact at the core of its growth model.
Precisely for its role as a driver of the circular economy and as a virtuous example of cohesive entrepreneurship, Krill Design has been awarded the “Impresa e Valore” Prize by the Chamber of Commerce of Milan, Monza Brianza and Lodi. The award was presented during the official ceremony held at Teatro alla Scala in Milan and recognizes companies capable of anticipating societal trends by integrating economic development, innovation, and social and environmental responsibility.
“Caring for the territory means transforming what already exists into shared value, enhancing local supply chains and giving new life to what others would discard. This vision is what led to the creation of ReKrill®, our patented biomaterial made from agri-food by-products such as coffee grounds, citrus peels, shells, and seeds,” says Ivan Calimani, CEO and Founder of Krill Design.
“Operating in this way means respecting resources, strengthening the local manufacturing ecosystem, and demonstrating that innovation and responsibility can generate tangible results. This is how we give back to the territory—by creating environmental, economic, and social benefits.”
ReKrill® is a fully biodegradable and compostable biopolymer, designed to replace traditional plastics in industrial processes and in applications developed by brands seeking to stand out for sustainability and innovation. Supplied in pellet form, ReKrill® is compatible with existing plastic-processing equipment, without conversion costs, and is engineered to reduce environmental impact across multiple industries, including fashion, packaging, design, furniture, electronics, and toys.
The investment in the new technical laboratory will enable Krill Design to accelerate research on 100% compostable materials, develop new biopolymers, and co-design solutions with industrial brands that prioritize sustainability and design excellence. The decision to allocate half of future investment resources to R&D further underscores the company’s commitment to a regenerative industrial model, increasingly aligned with the challenges of the ecological transition and the expectations of local communities.
The “Impresa e Valore” Award ultimately confirms Krill Design’s journey as a company dedicated to responsible innovation, capable of generating positive impact and new opportunities for the Lombardy region and for the Italian bioeconomy value chain as a whole.
